Chapter 13

For an entire day nothing bad happened. They finished the repairs on Mike's cabin. The squirrels were removed, by means Abby still didn't understand, and the faulty wiring in the Reilly's cabin was discovered and fixed. The repairs on cabins forty-one, forty, and thirty-nine were all completed, which put them well ahead of schedule.

If it wasn't for the threat of more deaths, Abby would have actually been enjoying herself. She'd never worked with a more efficient crew. She'd never gotten one night, let alone three nights, of good sleep before. She'd woken to kisses and an extra thousand dollars in her bank account. Really, the day couldn't get much better.

It could, however, get worse. Days could always get worse.

Just before quitting time she cruised through her text messages, just in case she had any work related ones, and saw one from Logan asking her to come into town on her way home.

"Sure; what's up?" she texted back.

"I just need to talk to you."

She hated it when people said they just needed to talk to her. It was code for "I want to tell you something about yourself you may not know".

Abby knocked on Logan and Kate's door, feeling a sort of uneasiness she usually only felt when she walked past the church. She didn't like it. She knew, without knowing, that her good day was about to fall apart. You're probably overreacting. You and I both know I'm not. We can always hope.

"Abby, come in," Logan greeted as he opened the door. His normally cheerful face was lacking any levity, which didn't surprise her.

She followed him into the kitchen and sat at the table when he motioned for her to.

"Weather was nice today," he said conversationally. "Although I could go for more snow. How about you?"

"Get to the point," Abby said.

"Alright." He licked his lips nervously. "The thing is... So about what time did you get home Saturday night?"

"What?"

"What time did you leave the camp?"

"About six. I came into town to talk to Dad."

"Did you go straight home afterwards?"

"Yes."

"Did you stay home all night?"

"Of course!" Abby exclaimed. "What the hell're you getting at?"

"Based on the condition of the last body, how frozen it was and stuff, Alfred puts the time of death between ten and two on Saturday night."

"Okay?" Abby still wasn't sure what this had to do with her.

"The thing is Dad and I did some canvasing on the main roads out to the camp, and Mr. Hammond, you know the rancher on County Road Nine? Anyway, he said he saw your truck driving out to the camp around midnight."

Abby stared at Logan trying to determine if he was serious, and he was. He was absolutely, one hundred percent serious. She was a freaking murder suspect.

"Are you kidding me?" she hissed.

"I'm sorry, Abs. I'm just doing my job."

"Just doing your job? You could've at least had the courtesy to tell me I was a suspect first!"

"Are you sure you were home all night?" he asked intently.

"Yes, I'm goddamn sure! And furthermore I'd like to know what the hell Mr.
